Lan Su Chinese Gardens

Portland guitarist Ryan Meagher (pronounced Marr) views this performance as a tribute to one of the most underrated quartets in jazz history. The light and lyrical sound of Paul Desmond had a much deeper output than being a sideman in Dave Brubeck’s Quartet. The quartets Desmond led alongside guitarist Jim Hall and drummer Connie Kay had a revolving door of top-call bassists but always maintained a focused aesthetic with no frills. Meagher’s usual quartet is comprised of some of Portland’s most intellectual, sensitive, and virtuostic improvisers on their respective instruments. Together, they wil play music from the RCA recordings of the Desmond/Hall quartet recorded from 1959-1965, as well as some original music inspired by this group. The Metropolitan Youth Symphony will provide a string section to accompany the quartet as special guests for this unique, one-time only engagement.

Non-Idiomatic Improvisation Master Class

I'm holding a master class in the art of non-idiomatic improvisation. Another good name for it is "spontaneous composition." Guitarists of ALL LEVELS and ALL GENRES are encouraged to improvise in new and exciting ways by using an approach designed to break down some of the constructions we put on improvisation in general. This is not a "jam session" or merely a bunch of "noodling". The idea is to spontaneously compose meaningful musical moments with fellow guitarists.

December 2009

Cornelia St Cafe

New York City-based guitarist and composer, Ryan Meagher (pronounced Marr) brings his unique brand of modern jazz for the indie rocker to an established scene for creativity in the West Village's Cornelia Street Cafe. His album of all original music is full of guitar-driven compositions, elaborate (yet singable) melodies, unpredictable forms and meters, and well-placed improvisation (both by the individuals and by the group collectively). Meagher’s songs feature grooves one might hear from a Soundgarden record (such as the tune “Can’t Complane" or “Re: Creation") while the reeds play floating lines that invoke a cross between Ornette Coleman and Paul Motian melodies.

The group featured at Cornelia Street Café on the 30th of December is slightly different than the lineup listed on the record, but it still features some of the most dynamic young players the New York jazz scene has to offer. Their individuality and musicianship coupled with the fresh sound Meagher’s compositions bring to the table make it an enlightening listening experience.
